Communities Come Together for Climate Action at The Green Table Northumberland
Community groups, public organisations and sector specialists from across rural Northumberland gathered at Humshaugh Village Hall on Tuesday 27 January for The Green Table Northumberland, a collaborative event focused on renewable energy, carbon reduction and protecting the rural environment.
Organised by Community Action Northumberland, the event brought together a wide range of voices, from parish councils and community energy groups to emergency services and environmental bodies. Despite challenging weather conditions, the strong turnout reflected growing local commitment to community-led climate action.
A central part of the discussion was the work of Humshaugh Net Zero, a community-led initiative aiming to make the parish net zero by 2030. Local residents shared their experience of developing solar, battery and heat pump projects, alongside the practical challenges faced by rural communities, including grid capacity, funding barriers and complex regulation.
Safety and best practice were also key themes. Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service provided important guidance on lithium-ion battery installations, highlighting steps communities can take to reduce risk and improve safety.
The Green Table Northumberland at Humshaugh demonstrated the power of collaboration and honest conversation in tackling the climate challenge. By bringing together experience, expertise and local passion, the event offered a clear reminder that rural communities have a vital role to play in shaping a more sustainable, resilient future for Northumberland.
